What Australian Riders Should Pack?

When Australian riders join a guided motorcycle trip in India, one of the biggest adjustments is the change in climate and riding environment. While many parts of Australia are warm and dry for much of the year, Indian riding regions, especially the Himalayas bring sharp temperature shifts, high altitude cold, wind, and sudden weather changes. Packing correctly ensures your ride remains comfortable and safe throughout the journey.

Australian riders are strongly encouraged to use motorcycle riding gear for the best fit and familiarity, especially when transitioning from Australia’s generally mild riding conditions to the colder and more demanding Himalayan environment.

Clothing & Personal Items

Even during India’s summer months, Himalayan nights can feel far colder than most Australian winter rides. Layering becomes essential.

  • Thermal base layers
  • Light fleece or down jacket
  • Casual clothes for evenings
  • Quick-dry socks and undergarments
  • Comfortable walking shoes or sandals

Weather & Health Essentials

While Australian riders are used to sun protection, India adds new challenges such as altitude dryness, colder winds, and sudden rain.

  • Compact rain suit
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm
  • Moisturizing cream (altitude dries skin quickly)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Personal medication and small first-aid kit

Feedback from Australian Riders

We booked the 10 days motorcycle tour of Ladakh with my wife. It was a double first: in India and with an organised tour. On both counts, the trip was over our expectations. Ladakh is definitely gorgeous. The tour was very well managed: the itinerary is well chosen, the hotels were fine (even great), the food was tasty, the motorcycles were in good shape and the road captain was excellent. He set a fine pace (at least for us:-) and was helpful each time we had questions.

Thanks to him, the mechanic and the driver, the spirit of the group was high. The other participants were the same age as our kids and they really cared for us: we feel very lucky.

We booked through internet after a few fast and to-the-point e-mail exchanges. They organised a private guided tour of New-Delhi before our return flight; it was good.

We have no problem to recommend Brahmand tour

I recently completed the 13 day Himalayan Heights tour with Brahmand Tour & Travels. Communication prior to the tour was responded to quickly and Raj answered all my questions. Travel in the Himalayas is not like anywhere else. You have to be prepared to make changes on the fly as weather plays a important roll and safety is always of top concern. Brahmand, Raj, took care of me from the time I landed in Delhi until the day I left!

The quality of the tour was extremely high which included the bikes, routes, accommodation and meals. The support team which included a vehicle carrying luggage, mechanic and guide all acted in a professional manner. I am doubtful if you will find another tour as thrilling, fun and economical as this tour company can provide.

Thank you to Raj and his team for supplying a life changing experience!

I had a fantastic time and couldn’t ask for a better tour company to do this with. Raj was amazing, always making sure everybody was okay and couldn’t do enough to make sure we were having a good time. As we like off-road adventure, this catered for us as there was a little bit of dirt road we could transverse.

The accommodation was great and the food was lovely. The Bikes preformed really well even at 5500 m!

Frequently Asked Questions (Australia)

Are motorcycle tours in India safe for Australian riders?

Yes, India is very safe for Australian riders when traveling with a professional guided tour provider. Established tour companies offer experienced English-speaking road captains, backup vehicles, mechanics, medical support, and carefully planned routes. Himalayan tours also include acclimatization schedules and oxygen support. With proper preparation and guidance, Australian riders regularly complete multi-day and high-altitude expeditions across India safely and comfortably.

What type of motorcycles are provided on Indian tours?

Most guided tours offer well-maintained adventure and touring motorcycles such as Royal Enfield Himalayan, Classic 350/500 and similar models suited for Indian terrain. Bikes are selected based on route difficulty, rider experience, and tour style.

Can Australians join as solo riders or must they come as a group?

Both options are welcome. Solo Australian riders often join international group departures and quickly become part of a global riding community. Groups of friends or clubs can also request private tours with customized routes and schedules.

What license do Australians need to ride a motorcycle in India?

Australian riders must carry their valid Australian motorcycle license along with an International Driving Permit (IDP) that specifically includes motorcycle authorization. The IDP must always be carried together with the original license. Most tour providers help verify documents before arrival and guide riders through the legal requirements.

Do Australians need a visa to travel to India?

Yes, Australian citizens require an Indian visa. The eVisa (eTourist Visa) is the most convenient option and can be applied online at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Processing typically takes 3-5 business days. Your passport must have at least 6 months validity from the date of arrival. Brahmand Tour provides visa guidance to Australian riders as part of the booking process.

When is the best time for Australians to visit India for motorcycle touring?

For Himalayan routes like Ladakh and Spiti Valley, the riding season is May through September when mountain passes are open. For Rajasthan desert and cultural routes, October through March offers the most pleasant riding weather. Southern India coastal tours can be enjoyed year-round except during monsoon months (June-September). Australian riders often plan around their own winter months (June-August) to catch India's Himalayan summer season.

What should I pack for a motorcycle tour in India?

Bring your riding jacket, gloves, sturdy boots, and layered clothing for temperature variations from hot plains to cold mountain passes. A waterproof outer layer is essential. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, personal medications, and a basic first-aid kit. Your tour operator will send a comprehensive packing checklist before departure.

How is altitude sickness handled on Himalayan tours?

Himalayan tour itineraries include planned acclimatization days at key elevations, gradual altitude gain, and support vehicles carrying oxygen cylinders. Road captains monitor riders daily for altitude symptoms. If needed, riders can rest in the backup vehicle and rejoin the ride when ready. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol at high altitude are strongly recommended.

What accommodation is provided during the tour?

Accommodation ranges from comfortable 3-star hotels in cities to heritage properties in Rajasthan and the best available guesthouses in remote mountain areas. In Ladakh and Spiti, lodging is basic but clean with hot water and meals provided. Desert camp stays in Rajasthan offer a unique cultural experience. Standards are chosen to balance comfort with authentic adventure.

Are meals included? What about dietary needs?

Yes, breakfast and dinner are included on most tour packages. Indian cuisine naturally provides extensive vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. If you have specific dietary requirements or allergies, inform us at booking and we will coordinate with all accommodation and restaurants along the route. Lunch stops feature local restaurants where riders can choose freely.

Do I need travel insurance for riding in India?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for all international riders. Your policy must cover motorcycle riding, medical emergencies, high-altitude activities for Himalayan tours, trip cancellation, and emergency evacuation. We recommend a comprehensive adventure travel policy purchased before departure. Riders must carry proof of insurance coverage throughout the tour.

What is the typical daily riding distance?

Most tour days cover 150-250 km with 5-6 hours of actual riding, including stops for photos, chai breaks, and sightseeing. Himalayan route days may be shorter due to challenging terrain and altitude. Rest days are included in longer tours for recovery, cultural exploration, and sightseeing. The pace is designed for enjoyment, not endurance.

How much does a motorcycle tour in India cost for Australian riders?

Tour packages typically range from AUD 2,200 to AUD 5,800 depending on route, duration, and accommodation level. This includes motorcycle rental with fuel, experienced road captain, backup vehicle with mechanic, accommodation, meals (breakfast and dinner), all permits, and airport transfers. International flights and travel insurance are not included. Contact us for a detailed quote based on your preferred itinerary.
