Start ride from Leh to the beautiful Nubra Valley crossing the world’s highest motorable pass Khardung La at 18,380 feet (5,602 meters). The road conditions here can be rough with steep climbs and descents but the views are worth every turn. In Nubra, known as the “Valley of Flowers”, head to the cold desert and take a double hump camel ride, a unique experience of this region. Nubra is the highlight of any Leh Ladakh bike trip.
After visiting the Buddha statue at Diskit, ride to the famous Pangong Lake with a scenic ride along the Shyok River. With the mountains towering above you this is one of the most beautiful parts of the Leh Ladakh bike trip. On arrival at Pangong Lake at 14,300 feet and stretching across the India-China border you will see the lake’s blue waters and vast shores perfect for photos and contemplation.
Today we leave Pangong and head towards Tso Kar Lake which is a less visited but stunningly beautiful lake. This long road feels like "no man’s land" where you will only see rugged landscapes and wildlife. En route we pass through Chusul and remote Puga Sumdo and cross Polo Kongka Pass at 16,140 ft. Tso Kar is a haven for solitude seekers and photographers.
Your ride will get even more adventurous as we leave Tso Kar and head towards Jispa. We will cross the high-altitude Tanglang La Pass (17,480 ft), one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The route then takes us over Lachulung La (16,600 ft) and Naki La (15,547 ft) and see the massive peaks and deep valleys along the Leh Ladakh Road Trip. We stop at Sarchu, the boundary between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh and then continue to Jispa, famous for its green meadows and river valleys.
Today is going to be an exciting day as we ride from Jispa over Shinkula Pass (16,700 ft) to Padum in the Zanskar Valley which is untouched and beautiful with endless mountains. This stretch is for the thrill seekers as we ride on rough trails and off road. Here we will visit the Pibiting Monastery, an ancient Buddhist site perched on a hill that offers panoramic views of the valley. We will stop at local spots enroute and this day will be filled with memories of the bike trip to Leh Ladakh.
After Padum you head towards Lamayuru, crossing Singge La Pass (16,500 ft) and Sir La (15,850 ft). June to September is the best time for Leh Ladakh Bike Trip as the weather is stable and road conditions are best. You will have less roadblocks due to snow or rain during this period and it’s the perfect window for bikers from all over the world.
One of the most challenging motorcycle trips to the Himalayas, this route has high altitude passes, rocky terrain and unpredictable weather. Intermediate to advanced riders will find it manageable but beginners should start with shorter trips before attempting the Ladakh Bike Expedition.
Yes, riders need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to visit restricted areas like Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri. Permits are available online or at Leh permit office and all participants on Ladakh bike tours must comply with local regulations.
Bikes with engine 350cc and above like Royal Enfield Himalayan or Bullet 500 are good as the climbs are steep and surfaces are rough. Lower cc bikes will struggle with Ladakh’s roads especially around Khardung La and Chang La passes.
To combat altitude sickness allow a couple of days in Leh for acclimatization before going to higher passes. Stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities initially and carry medication like Diamox to make the Leh Ladakh motorcycle trip more comfortable.
Most Leh Ladakh Bike Tours cover Leh, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake and Tso Moriri over 11-12 days. This duration gives you enough time to experience the adventure and Ladakh’s culture and high altitude landscapes without rushing.
Fuel stations are scarce on the Leh Ladakh route. Key stops are in Leh, Tandi (on the Manali-Leh highway) and Karu. Carry extra fuel especially if you are going to remote areas like Tso Moriri and Pangong Lake where stations are very few.
Must haves are riding gear, thermal layers, high-SPF sunscreen, first-aid kit and extra fuel containers. Since Ladakh’s weather is unpredictable, waterproof clothing and bike repair tools are also a must to handle the challenges of Ladakh Bike Expedition.
