From the Gateway of India, you will enjoy a ferry ride to Elephanta Island, which is named after a colossal elephant statue found on the island, popularly known as "Gharapuri." Today, the elephant statue is housed in Mumbai's Jijamata Garden. In ancient times, the place was variously identified as Puri, mentioned in the Aihole inscription of Pulakesin II. It appears that several dynasties ruled over this island, namely the Konkan-Mauryas, Trikutakas, Chalukyas of Badami, Silaharas, Rashtrakutas, Kalyani Chalukyas, Yadavas of Deogiri, Muslim rulers of Ahmedabad, and later the Portuguese. The Marathas also controlled this island before it passed into British hands.

There are seven excavations in the Elephanta group of caves, which date back to between the 6th and 7th centuries AD. Overnight stay at the hotel.
