Dasaswamedh Ghat

Early in the morning, you will take a private sunrise boat ride along the ghats of the sacred Ganges River. At dawn, Hindu worshippers pour into the river to purify themselves of their sins. You will see cremation ghats and Dasaswamedh ghats. To die in Varanasi is to end the Hindu cycle of rebirths, making it a popular place to end one's life.

After the visit, we will return to the hotel for breakfast.

You will continue for an excursion to Sarnath (closed on Fridays), one of the world's major Buddhist centres. After attaining enlightenment in Bodhgaya, Buddha, the “Awakened One,” delivered his first sermon here. It was the 6th century when he set in motion the wheel of law, the Dharmachakra. This abode of the Rishis was also known as “Rishipatana” (place of the Rishis or sages). Buddha delivered his first sermon in Deer Park, where he initiated his first five disciples into Buddhist monasticism. Buddhism found its roots in Sarnath, the birthplace of this way of life.

In the evening, visit the banks of the sacred Ganges on small boats to see Hindu devotees performing the “Arti Puja” ceremony with lighted lamps. The priests presiding over the event are standing on a Chauki (wooden stand) near the water. To the chanting of Sanskrit mantras and the sound of cymbals and drums, the river is worshipped with flowers, incense, sandalwood, milk and vermilion. First, the burning camphor lamp and then the many flaming aarti lamps are raised high and then arched toward the water, the dark river reflecting golden flames as the Ganges accepts worship. It is the Ganges that gives Varanasi its spiritual resonance.
