Choose Ladakh if
- You want the classic: the highest motorable roads, Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley and Khardung La are all here.
- You prefer tarmac with occasional rough patches over sustained gravel.
- You have two weeks or more. Ladakh rewards time; the best side valleys (Hanle, Tso Moriri, Zanskar) need extra days.
- You want a group departure; Ladakh has the most fixed dates from June to September.
Our 19-day Leh Ladakh Motorcycle Trip approaches via Spiti and Zanskar, which solves the altitude problem by climbing gradually over ten days before Leh.
Choose Spiti if
- You like technical riding: broken tarmac, gravel, river crossings and narrow cliff roads are most of the route.
- You want fewer tourists and more village life; Spiti has a fraction of Ladakh's visitors.
- You have 8 to 12 days and want to start and finish within reach of Delhi by road.
- You want a slightly lower maximum altitude, although Kaza is as high as Leh, so acclimatisation still matters.
The Kinnaur, Spiti and Zanskar Expedition is the route for riders who want gravel and remoteness.
Or ride both
The Shimla to Manali to Leh circuit links the two: Kinnaur and Spiti first (gradual altitude gain, technical riding), then over Kunzum La to Manali, then the Manali-Leh highway into Ladakh. That is the shape of our Trans-Himalayan Motorcycle Tour and the long Leh Ladakh expedition. It takes 15 to 19 days and is the best single itinerary in the Indian Himalaya for a rider with the time.
Altitude: the factor people underrate
Both regions put you above 3,500 m for most of the trip. Flying into Leh and riding the next day is the single most common mistake unsupported riders make. Our Ladakh itineraries either arrive by road over several days, or include two rest days in Leh before any pass. The backup vehicle carries oxygen and a pulse oximeter on every Himalayan departure, and the tour leader checks riders each morning.
