Few destinations on earth offer the combination of raw natural grandeur, living Buddhist culture, and genuine remoteness that Ladakh and Zanskar deliver and fewer still are accessible enough to be shared with family or experienced as a group without sacrificing any of the adventure. This 10-day journey is designed for those who want the real Himalayas: not a sanitised highlight reel, but an immersive passage through ancient monastery valleys, lunar landscapes, sacred river confluences, and some of the most dramatically beautiful mountain roads in Asia.

Travelling by comfortable vehicle with an experienced guide and full support throughout, the itinerary moves at a pace that works equally well for families with older children, small groups of friends, or corporate teams looking for an experience that no conference room can replicate. For adventure seekers, we also bring Ladakh Zanskar Bike Trip. From the iconic rooftops of Leh to the cliff-hanging wonder of Phuktal Monastery deep in Zanskar- a place that the majority of the world will never reach- this is a journey that brings people together, strips away the noise of ordinary life, and replaces it with something that genuinely cannot be found anywhere else on earth.

Zanskar Ladakh Family Holiday Itinerary

Jama Masjid, Delhi

Your Ladakh and Zanskar journey begins the moment you land at Delhi International Airport. Our representative will be waiting to welcome you, assist with your transfer, and ensure a smooth check-in at your hotel. The remainder of the day is entirely yours- rest after the long journey, settle in, and let the anticipation build. If your arrival time permits, an optional orientation drive through the wide boulevards and landmarks of New Delhi offers a gentle first taste of India before the mountains begin.

Overnight: Delhi

Golden Temple

An early morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Leh and what a flight it is. On a clear morning, the view from the window as the aircraft crosses the Himalayan ranges is alone worth the early alarm. On arrival at Leh Airport at 3,500 metres, the thin air makes itself immediately known. Our team will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel, but the agenda for today is simple and non-negotiable: rest.

Do not exert yourself, drink water consistently throughout the day, and allow your body the time it needs to adjust to the altitude. Acclimatization is not optional in Leh- it is the foundation on which the rest of this journey is built. A quiet afternoon and an early night will serve you far better than any sightseeing today.

Overnight: Leh

Dharamshala

After a good night's rest and breakfast, you will find that Leh looks entirely different when your body has adjusted to its altitude. The morning begins at Shanti Stupa, the gleaming white Buddhist monument perched on a hilltop above the city, offering one of the finest panoramic views over Leh town, the Indus Valley, and the surrounding mountain ranges. From here, continue to Leh Palace- the nine-storey royal residence that dominates the old town's skyline, its rooms and chapels telling the story of Ladakh's royal heritage across several centuries. The afternoon brings a visit to the peaceful Sankar Monastery, tucked quietly into the hillside above town, before a wander through the lively Leh Market- a wonderful mix of Tibetan handicrafts, hand-woven woollens, prayer flags, local jewellery, and small cafés where travellers from across the world gather over cups of butter tea. Overnight: Leh

Dalai Lama Temple

After breakfast, the journey into the Sham Valley begins- one of Ladakh's most rewarding monastery trails. The first stop is Likir Monastery, set on a gentle hilltop above the valley, where a towering golden Maitreya Buddha statue presides over the surrounding landscape with quiet authority. The monastery's monks, its painted assembly halls, and the sweeping views from its courtyard make it a deeply pleasant stop. Continue to Alchi Monastery, one of the oldest and most significant monastic complexes in the entire Ladakh region.

Unlike the hilltop monasteries that dominate most of Ladakh, Alchi sits at valley level among poplar trees and irrigation channels and inside its ancient temples, extraordinary Indo-Tibetan murals painted nearly a thousand years ago survive in remarkable condition. From Alchi, the road pushes further into increasingly dramatic terrain- the mountains growing starker and more sculptural until Lamayuru appears on its eroded plateau of lunar-like formations. The ancient monastery here, one of the oldest in Ladakh, sits at the heart of a landscape so strange and striking that it genuinely stops conversation. Explore Leh Ladakh Tour Packages and choose a best itinerary for you.

Overnight: Lamayuru / Alchi

Kullu Valley

This is the day the journey shifts register entirely. After breakfast, the road leaves behind Ladakh's relative familiarity and pushes into the Zanskar Valley- one of the most remote and isolated inhabited regions in all of Asia. The drive is long and the roads are demanding, but the scenery more than compensates for every difficult kilometre. River valleys carved impossibly deep into the plateau, high-altitude villages where life continues largely as it has for centuries, mountain passes swept by cold winds, and an almost total absence of other travellers- this is Zanskar, and it asks something of you before it gives itself up. By the time Padum appears in its wide valley floor, the administrative centre of this remote kingdom feels like a genuinely earned destination.

Overnight: Padum

Vashisht Temple

A slower, gentler day and after yesterday's drive, a welcome one. The morning is spent exploring Padum's surroundings at an unhurried pace, beginning with Karsha Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar. Its whitewashed buildings climb a steep hillside in dramatic tiers, visible from kilometres away across the flat valley floor, and inside its assembly halls, centuries of Buddhist artistic tradition are preserved in murals, thangkas, and ceremonial objects. The rest of the day is spent wandering through nearby traditional settlements along the banks of the Zanskar River, where farmers tend small fields framed by barren mountains, and the rhythms of high-altitude village life continue with remarkable self-sufficiency. The day also serves a practical purpose- an extra rest at altitude before the more demanding excursion that follows.

Overnight: Padum

Phuktal Monastery

There are monasteries in Ladakh, and then there is Phuktal. After breakfast, set out for one of the most extraordinary monastic sites not just in the Himalayas, but anywhere on earth. Phuktal Monastery is built directly into a natural cave in a sheer cliff face- its whitewashed cells, temples, and courtyards appearing to grow organically from the rock itself, suspended above a river gorge in a manner that seems to defy both gravity and common sense.

Founded in the 12th century, the monastery has been a centre of Buddhist learning for over 800 years, and the monks who live here do so in conditions of genuine remoteness. The journey involves a drive followed by a walk or short trek depending on road conditions- the approach itself, along the cliff edge above the Tsarap River, is as dramatic as the destination. Return to Padum by evening, carrying the memory of something genuinely rare.

Overnight: Padum

Himalayan terrain to reach Padum

Leaving Zanskar, today's drive opens into a new and equally spectacular chapter. The route toward Kargil passes through Rangdum- a high, wide valley so remote and so beautiful that most travellers never reach it. Rangdum Monastery stands alone in this landscape like something placed there deliberately to remind travellers of the relationship between solitude and the sacred. The drive continues through the Suru Valley, where the road runs beneath the massive glaciated faces of Nun and Kun- two peaks exceeding 7,000 metres- their ice walls close enough to feel almost threatening. Mountain villages, glacier streams, and high-altitude grazing pastures line the route before the descent into Kargil, a strategically significant town at the junction of ancient trade routes and the site of one of modern India's most defining military engagements.

Overnight: Kargil

Sirsir La

The final drive back to Leh is rich with remarkable stops. The first is the Mulbekh Chamba Statue- a towering image of the Maitreya Buddha carved directly into a roadside rock face, believed to date back to the 8th century and one of the finest examples of rock-cut art in Ladakh. The road then climbs over Namika La and Fotu La- two high passes offering sweeping views across the layered ridgelines of the Himalayan ranges before descending gradually back toward the Indus Valley and Leh. Arrive in the afternoon with the evening free for a last wander through Leh Market, a final meal at one of the town's rooftop cafés, or simply sitting with the mountains before the journey home.

Overnight: Leh

Gurudwara Patthar Sahib

A final breakfast at the hotel before your transfer to Leh Airport. The flight lifts you out of the valley and back across the Himalayas, and in the window beside you the mountains that have defined the last ten days recede slowly into the distance.

FAQ

How do I plan Ladakh Zanskar Valley Tour? Toggle Icon

Planning a Ladakh and Zanskar trip requires more preparation than a typical holiday, but that is precisely what makes it so rewarding. The journey involves high-altitude travel, remote mountain roads, and regions that are largely cut off from mainstream tourism infrastructure- so having the right operator makes all the difference. The ideal approach is to fly into Leh from Delhi, spend the first day acclimatizing at altitude before any sightseeing begins, and then build the itinerary progressively- moving from Leh's monasteries into the Sham Valley, and finally into the deep wilderness of Zanskar. Our 10-day Ladakh and Zanskar tour is fully planned and supported, covering accommodation, transfers, permits, and an experienced local guide throughout, so you can focus entirely on the experience rather than the logistics.

How much does a Ladakh Zanskar trip cost? Toggle Icon

The cost of a Ladakh and Zanskar trip depends on several factors- group size, accommodation category, duration, and whether you are travelling independently or on a fully guided package. For international travellers, a well-supported 10-day guided tour including flights from Delhi, hotel accommodation, all transfers, meals, permits, and a dedicated guide typically ranges between USD 1,500 and USD 2,500 per person, depending on the standard of accommodation chosen. Travelling as a group or family significantly reduces the per-person cost, making it one of the most rewarding value-for-money Himalayan motorcycle journeys available. For a detailed itinerary-based quote tailored to your group size and travel dates, get in touch with our team directly.

What is best time to visit Zanskar Valley? Toggle Icon

The best time to visit Zanskar Valley is between June and September, when the mountain roads are open, the weather is stable, and the landscape is at its most accessible. July and August are the peak months- the days are long, the skies are clear, and the high passes that connect Zanskar to the outside world are fully open. June is excellent for those who prefer fewer fellow travellers and slightly cooler temperatures. September offers arguably the finest light of the year- golden, clear, and low- making it a favourite among photographers. Outside this window, many of the roads into Zanskar become impassable due to snow, and the valley returns to the isolation that has defined it for centuries. For family groups and first-time visitors, mid-July through August is the most comfortable and reliable window.

Is Zanskar Valley safe to plan a family trip? Toggle Icon

Absolutely. Zanskar Valley, while remote, is a safe and welcoming destination for families, provided the trip is well planned and paced sensibly. The primary consideration for families is altitude- Leh sits at 3,500 metres and parts of Zanskar exceed 4,000 metres, so the itinerary must include a proper acclimatization day in Leh before the journey progresses. Children above the age of eight generally adapt well to altitude with adequate rest, hydration, and a gradual ascent.

Our itinerary is specifically designed with rest days and a progressive altitude gain to ensure the body adjusts naturally at every stage. Travel is by comfortable vehicle throughout, roads in the main touring areas are manageable, and our guides are trained in altitude awareness and first aid. Families who travel with us from the UK, Australia, the United States, and Europe consistently rate the Zanskar experience as one of the most extraordinary journeys they have taken together as a family.

Do international travellers need a special permit to visit Zanskar and Ladakh? Toggle Icon

Yes, certain areas within Ladakh require an Inner Line Permit (ILP), including Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and parts of the Zanskar region. These permits are straightforward to obtain but must be arranged in advance or upon arrival in Leh. As part of our fully supported tour, we handle all permit applications on your behalf- you simply need a valid passport and we take care of the rest. International travellers do not require a visa specifically for Ladakh beyond the standard Indian tourist visa, which is easily obtained online through the Indian e-Visa system prior to departure. Our team provides complete pre-departure documentation guidance for travellers arriving from the USA, UK, Europe, Australia, Canada, and beyond.

Can I combine a Ladakh and Zanskar trip with a motorcycle expedition? Toggle Icon

Yes, and for many international riders, this combination is the ultimate Himalayan experience. The same route that this tour covers by vehicle can be experienced on a Royal Enfield motorcycle, with every high pass, remote valley, and monastery visit transformed by the intimacy of two-wheel travel. Brahmand Tour operates fully supported Himalayan motorcycle expeditions covering Leh, Zanskar, Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, and the Changthang Plateau with experienced road captains, a support vehicle, a dedicated mechanic, and accommodation arranged throughout. Whether you are an experienced adventure rider or attempting Himalayan riding for the first time, our guided motorcycle tours are designed to make the journey safe, supported, and completely unforgettable.

How physically fit do I need to be for a Ladakh and Zanskar tour? Toggle Icon

This tour is accessible to most reasonably healthy travellers and does not require any trekking fitness or athletic preparation. Travel throughout is by vehicle, and sightseeing involves gentle walking at monastery and viewpoint stops. The most important physical factor is how your body responds to high altitude, which has less to do with fitness and more to do with acclimatization, hydration, and pacing. Our itinerary is deliberately structured to allow your body time to adjust before pushing to higher elevations. Travellers with pre-existing heart or respiratory conditions should consult their doctor before booking. For most international visitors including older travellers and families- the journey is entirely manageable and the rewards far outweigh any physical demands it places on you.
