An early morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Leh and what a flight it is. On a clear morning, the view from the window as the aircraft crosses the Himalayan ranges is alone worth the early alarm. On arrival at Leh Airport at 3,500 metres, the thin air makes itself immediately known. Our team will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel, but the agenda for today is simple and non-negotiable: rest.

Do not exert yourself, drink water consistently throughout the day, and allow your body the time it needs to adjust to the altitude. Acclimatization is not optional in Leh- it is the foundation on which the rest of this journey is built. A quiet afternoon and an early night will serve you far better than any sightseeing today.

Overnight: Leh

After a good night's rest and breakfast, you will find that Leh looks entirely different when your body has adjusted to its altitude. The morning begins at Shanti Stupa, the gleaming white Buddhist monument perched on a hilltop above the city, offering one of the finest panoramic views over Leh town, the Indus Valley, and the surrounding mountain ranges. From here, continue to Leh Palace- the nine-storey royal residence that dominates the old town's skyline, its rooms and chapels telling the story of Ladakh's royal heritage across several centuries. The afternoon brings a visit to the peaceful Sankar Monastery, tucked quietly into the hillside above town, before a wander through the lively Leh Market- a wonderful mix of Tibetan handicrafts, hand-woven woollens, prayer flags, local jewellery, and small cafés where travellers from across the world gather over cups of butter tea. After breakfast, the journey into the Sham Valley begins- one of Ladakh's most rewarding monastery trails. The first stop is Likir Monastery, set on a gentle hilltop above the valley, where a towering golden Maitreya Buddha statue presides over the surrounding landscape with quiet authority. The monastery's monks, its painted assembly halls, and the sweeping views from its courtyard make it a deeply pleasant stop. Unlike the hilltop monasteries that dominate most of Ladakh, Alchi sits at valley level among poplar trees and irrigation channels and inside its ancient temples, extraordinary Indo-Tibetan murals painted nearly a thousand years ago survive in remarkable condition. From Alchi, the road pushes further into increasingly dramatic terrain- the mountains growing starker and more sculptural until Lamayuru appears on its eroded plateau of lunar-like formations. This is the day the journey shifts register entirely. After breakfast, the road leaves behind Ladakh's relative familiarity and pushes into the Zanskar Valley- one of the most remote and isolated inhabited regions in all of Asia. The drive is long and the roads are demanding, but the scenery more than compensates for every difficult kilometre. River valleys carved impossibly deep into the plateau, high-altitude villages where life continues largely as it has for centuries, mountain passes swept by cold winds, and an almost total absence of other travellers- this is Zanskar, and it asks something of you before it gives itself up. By the time Padum appears in its wide valley floor, the administrative centre of this remote kingdom feels like a genuinely earned destination.

A slower, gentler day and after yesterday's drive, a welcome one. The morning is spent exploring Padum's surroundings at an unhurried pace, beginning with Karsha Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Zanskar. Its whitewashed buildings climb a steep hillside in dramatic tiers, visible from kilometres away across the flat valley floor, and inside its assembly halls, centuries of Buddhist artistic tradition are preserved in murals, thangkas, and ceremonial objects. The rest of the day is spent wandering through nearby traditional settlements along the banks of the Zanskar River, where farmers tend small fields framed by barren mountains, and the rhythms of high-altitude village life continue with remarkable self-sufficiency. The day also serves a practical purpose- an extra rest at altitude before the more demanding excursion that follows.

Overnight: Padum

There are monasteries in Ladakh, and then there is Phuktal. After breakfast, set out for one of the most extraordinary monastic sites not just in the Himalayas, but anywhere on earth. Phuktal Monastery is built directly into a natural cave in a sheer cliff face- its whitewashed cells, temples, and courtyards appearing to grow organically from the rock itself, suspended above a river gorge in a manner that seems to defy both gravity and common sense.

Founded in the 12th century, the monastery has been a centre of Buddhist learning for over 800 years, and the monks who live here do so in conditions of genuine remoteness. The journey involves a drive followed by a walk or short trek depending on road conditions- the approach itself, along the cliff edge above the Tsarap River, is as dramatic as the destination. Return to Padum by evening, carrying the memory of something genuinely rare.

Leaving Zanskar, today's drive opens into a new and equally spectacular chapter. The route toward Kargil passes through Rangdum- a high, wide valley so remote and so beautiful that most travellers never reach it. Rangdum Monastery stands alone in this landscape like something placed there deliberately to remind travellers of the relationship between solitude and the sacred. The drive continues through the Suru Valley, where the road runs beneath the massive glaciated faces of Nun and Kun- two peaks exceeding 7,000 metres- their ice walls close enough to feel almost threatening. Mountain villages, glacier streams, and high-altitude grazing pastures line the route before the descent into Kargil, a strategically significant town at the junction of ancient trade routes and the site of one of modern India's most defining military engagements.

The final drive back to Leh is rich with remarkable stops. The first is the Mulbekh Chamba Statue- a towering image of the Maitreya Buddha carved directly into a roadside rock face, believed to date back to the 8th century and one of the finest examples of rock-cut art in Ladakh. The road then climbs over Namika La and Fotu La- two high passes offering sweeping views across the layered ridgelines of the Himalayan ranges before descending gradually back toward the Indus Valley and Leh. Arrive in the afternoon with the evening free for a last wander through Leh Market, a final meal at one of the town's rooftop cafés, or simply sitting with the mountains before the journey home.

A final breakfast at the hotel before your transfer to Leh Airport. The flight lifts you out of the valley and back across the Himalayas, and in the window beside you the mountains that have defined the last ten days recede slowly into the distance.
