One of the bloodiest wars in ancient India took place in ORISSA, also known as KALINGA. It was here that, revolted by the destruction and heedless loss of life he had wracked in the battle, the victorious king Ashok converted to Buddhism. The exquisite sun temple at Konark, which has been a beacon for sailors for centuries, is located in Orissa. Pilgrims and tourists flock to the architecturally unique temples of Puri and Bhubaneshwar during festival season, while the sun-drenched beaches of Puri and Gopalpur attract visitors from far and wide. Its vast interior, which has remained largely unaffected by consumerism, is home to a diverse and fascinating tribal population.
